Nothing soothes my soul like a visit to the Union Square Greenmarket. Just being there, among the dirt-speckled array of vegetables and equally diverse (and sometimes gritty) people of NYC, I am often moved to tears.
Some say it is too expensive. But when you place a few dollars into the hands of a farmer who has been up since dawn, who is standing there against the cold wind, look at their hands. Look at the dirt behind her fingernails. Look at the calluses on his palms, and know you are getting a steal.
Smile and say “thank you”, and you will always get both in return.
My mission for the day was to find burdock root for a kooky, Wonka-inspired miniature meal I am planning for this. It took some searching around, but I finally found some with a tip-off from none other than locavore author and blogger Cathy Erway, who was doing some shopping of her own.
(Thank you Ms. Erway, you rock!)
